Heavy rain swept across Florida’s Gulf Coast on Wednesday, October 7, flooding streets throughout Naples and leaving motorists stranded as water levels rose above a foot at some intersections. With more rain expected, tow truck drivers faced a busy stretch responding to vehicles disabled by the rising water.

Frank Nagy of Naples Towing was among those working to recover stranded vehicles, navigating flooded roadways to help motorists whose cars could no longer make it through the water. Nagy said he spent the day navigating flooded streets and towing approximately half a dozen vehicles as water levels climbed above a foot at some intersections. Other towing companies were handling even more calls.

“It was pretty flooded downtown,” Nagy said. “I was going around picking up some cars. It was quite deep, and people were still driving way too fast.”

Nagy identified several areas particularly vulnerable to flooding. With more rain expected, the conditions presented ongoing challenges for drivers and recovery operators working to clear disabled vehicles from flooded roadways.

Nagy offered a straightforward warning to motorists tempted to drive through standing water: “Don't go in the water. Go around it.”
