Unauthorized Tow Ops Resurface at SoCal Crash Scenes
In Southern California, unauthorized tow operators are again drawing attention as enforcement agencies warn of renewed crash scene poaching activity.
According to reporting by the California Post, one motorist was charged $3,000 to retrieve her vehicle following a crash. Disoriented at the scene, she was approached by a tow truck driver who claimed affiliation with law enforcement. The driver obtained her signature under the premise of a no-cost tow and estimate, then transported the vehicle to a tow yard.
When the owner later attempted to recover her vehicle, authorities advised that the signed document made the charges legally binding, limiting their ability to intervene.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has issued warnings about so-called “tow truck bandits,” noting that some operators monitor emergency communications and respond to crash scenes without authorization, presenting themselves as legitimate service providers.
Officials continue to advise motorists to verify tow authorization through law enforcement or their insurance provider before releasing their vehicle. Source: https://nypost.comhttps://www.wideopencountry.com/
