The tow truck driver shot during a violent confrontation on Southern California's 210 Freeway on July 3 remains in critical condition as family, coworkers and the towing community continue to pray for his recovery.

Jorge Arias Mayen, of West Covina, was working his final service call of the night for Azusa-based Jan's Towing when he was attacked on the right shoulder of the eastbound 210 Freeway near the Grand Avenue exit shortly before 3 a.m. Authorities said an unidentified driver confronted Mayen, produced a handgun and shot him multiple times before fleeing. Family members also told local television station KTLA that Mayen suffered stab wounds during the assault.

Witnesses called 911, and California Highway Patrol officers found Mayen critically injured. Television footage showed officers performing CPR before he was transported to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center.

The suspect was later located, leading officers on a pursuit that ended at a Covina gas station. After reportedly brandishing a handgun, the suspect was shot by CHP officers and later died.

Mayen has worked for Jan's Towing for 20 years and is described by family as a hardworking man who often stopped to help stranded motorists even while off duty. The sole provider for his wife and 15-year-old son, Mayen now faces mounting medical expenses as his family asks for continued prayers and community support.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help Mayen's family with mounting medical expenses. Donations can be made at: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-for-jorge-arias-mayens-recovery-dahm9.
