Tower Sentenced in Colorado Theft Scheme

A former Colorado tow truck driver has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after admitting to stealing nearly 50 vehicles and selling them for scrap.

Prosecutors say 38-year-old Brian Chacon targeted older, broken-down cars whose owners couldn’t move them right away. He would tow the vehicles and quickly sell them to salvage yards for up to $500 before they were reported stolen.

“This defendant preyed on those who could least afford the loss,” said Chief Deputy District Attorney Jake Adkins.

Investigators tied Chacon to thefts across 2023 and 2024 after deputies spotted a stolen car on his truck. A GPS tracker and Flock cameras later revealed the full operation.

Adkins said Chacon exploited loopholes in state towing and salvage regulations that allowed him to falsely claim ownership of vehicles.

Victims like Fort Lupton resident Gina Matrious described how the loss disrupted their families.

“These detectives uncovered a large-scale, calculated criminal operation,” Sheriff Darren Weekly said. Source: https://kdvr.com
