A Virginia tow truck driver is recovering in the hospital after being struck by a vehicle while finishing a tow on I-264.

Kelly Glanemann was securing the final strap on a vehicle Aug. 1 near Newtown Road when a Toyota 4Runner crossed the line and struck her, according to her sister, Kirsten.

“She was moments away from getting back in her truck and leaving, but she didn’t make it,” Kirsten said.

The impact sent Glanemann flying and left her with serious injuries. Her family feared they might lose her, but she survived and is now facing a long recovery. Kirsten said Kelly has yet to regain the ability to walk or use her arms.

Local tow truck operators from throughout Hampton Roads recently gathered to support Glanemann and recognize the dangers they face while working along busy roadways.

“You really don’t know if you’re coming home every time you walk out the door,” Kirsten said.

Virginia State Police charged the driver with reckless driving. Glanemann’s family hopes to push for stronger penalties and greater awareness of roadside workers.
