Tow Memorial for Texas Tower
Towers held a memorial on Wednesday, 9/2, for Dallas tow truck driver Garry McGee, who was killed Monday, 8/30, while hooking a disabled car on the Dallas High 5 interchange. He dropped 50 feet over a rail onto Central Expressway and was further hit by passing cars.
Denise Alford, the woman who allegedly caused the crash, was arrested and charged with manslaughter. She told police she had three alcoholic drinks earlier in the day and had also smoked marijuana, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. Court records show she’s been arrested multiple times before for reckless driving, driving without a valid license, and possession of a controlled substance.
McGee leaves behind a wife and two daughters. His family said he’d only been in the industry about two years, but loved his job.
"He loved it, he loves towing, and he would tell me every day that he loved his job," the victim’s wife, Ryan McGee, said.
"It hurts us all when one of us goes down," said Thomas Acevedo, with NorTex Towing, who has participated in six memorial services for towers.
Acevedo is part of a group in the tow truck industry trying to raise awareness for a Texas law the requires drivers to move over and slow down for both tow trucks and other emergency vehicles on the side of the road.
