Reverse Roll in Birmingham, England
One afternoon in May 2012, The Mansfield Group of Derbyshire, England, was called to respond to Holford Industrial Park in Birmingham to recover an overturned tractor-trailer. Thankfully no one was harmed, however The Mansfield Group was still quick to respond. The casualty was lying on its side across the road blocking traffic. Following an assessment of the situation, it was decided a reverse roll was the best option. It would be carried out using one of their Century 1075 rotators and air cushions. Mansfield’s Incident Support Unit, which carries needed recovery equipment including a complete air cushion setup, was also on the scene. The 75-ton rotator equipped with two 60,000-lbs. two-speed planetary winches was moved into position and the casualty was rigged for the reverse roll. The air cushion control bank was setup and three jumbo cushions were placed under the trailer to assist in the lift. The cushions were inflated slowly as the 1075 started to lift and the casualty came back up and onto its wheels.Brett Mansfield was the Incident Manager on scene, Paul Gratton operated the Century 1075 rotator, and Lee Mansfield and Adam Collett managed the air cushions.Due to the experienced operators and the right equipment the whole operation took a total of only two hours from the time the call was taken to the time the casualty was returned to Mansfield’s base. The Mansfield Group was established in 1978; over the years they have grown to become one of the largest dedicated vehicle rescue and recovery operations in the U.K. and Europe. The group now employs approximately 300 staff and operates a fleet of more than 200 specialized rescue and recovery units. The average age of their fleet is just over 18 months old and the equipment they use incorporates the latest technology available.
