New Towing Law to Save Drivers Thousands

Connecticut drivers are set to gain major protections when new rules take effect October 1.

Currently, towing companies can begin selling vehicles worth less than $1,500 just 15 days after a tow. Under the new law, the sale process cannot move forward until at least 30 days after the tow, and operators must take additional steps to notify owners.

The legislation also requires towing companies to accept credit cards and bans tows for minor issues like expired permits or registration. Cars on private property can no longer be removed without notice unless blocking traffic, fire hydrants, or handicap spaces.

Tony Guerrera, chair of the state DMV, stressed that for many residents, an inexpensive car is “a lifeline.” Lawmakers want to ensure people don’t lose vehicles to mounting fees before having a fair chance to reclaim them.  Source: https://www.the-sun.com
