On August 5, several new Arkansas laws officially took effect—90 days after lawmakers wrapped up their session in Little Rock. Among them are key updates aimed at improving work zone safety for road crews and emergency responders.

“It can be fast, and it can be dangerous,” said David Stinnett, District 6 Maintenance Engineer with ARDOT. “Our folks are often just feet away from traffic while repairing roads or mowing grass.”

The new law doubles fines in mobile work zones and requires all ARDOT construction and maintenance vehicles to use green flashing lights. Updates have also been made to the Arkansas Driver’s Manual and test, placing more emphasis on work zone awareness.

Tim Moody, General Manager of Jhook Towing, supports the changes. “Tow truck operators on the side of the highway... we lose one every six days across America,” he said. “Just slow down and move over.”

Driving instructor Robert Bennett is already using the changes to teach students. “The law now includes penalties and worker testimonials. It helps students understand the real risks,” he said. Source: https://www.thv11.com
