NC Senator Pushes for Towing Reform
North Carolina Sen. Caleb Theodros is calling for changes to Charlotte's towing regulations after a growing number of drivers reported paying steep fees to recover their vehicles. His proposal includes civil penalties for violations, a formal towing permit system, and public records documenting towing incidents.
"What we ask is for council to take this back up," Theodros told Queen City News, urging city leaders to improve transparency and strengthen consumer protections.
The renewed push follows a widely shared social media post by Yazan Humaideh, owner of Sip City in Charlotte's Plaza Midwood neighborhood. Humaideh said his vehicle was booted after parking in a private lot and that he was forced to pay despite providing proof of his situation.
He argues aggressive towing practices discourage customers from visiting local businesses.
Current Charlotte ordinances limit police to keeping the peace during towing disputes, preventing officers from intervening. A 2014 court ruling also eliminated the city's authority to cap towing fees.
