Federal Bill Targets Roadside Worker Safety Nationwide

Legislation has been introduced in the U.S. Senate to better protect first responders and roadside workers operating near traffic—marking a federal effort to address a nationwide safety issue. Sens. Dave McCormick (R-PA) and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) unveiled the bipartisan Safe Roads for Those Who Serve Act, aimed at reducing injuries and fatalities among those working on or near roadways across the country.

The bill would establish national standards and guidance, requiring states to improve how they collect and analyze data on highway worker incidents. It also calls for stronger safety measures in federally supported infrastructure projects and would launch a nationwide public awareness campaign highlighting the dangers faced by law enforcement, EMS personnel, tow operators, and construction crews.

The push comes amid sobering statistics. More than 500 roadside workers have been killed since 2020, with tow operators, construction workers, and law enforcement among the most affected. In Pennsylvania alone, over 1,250 work zone crashes occurred in 2024.

Backed by major industry groups, the legislation also emphasizes promoting “Slow Down, Move Over” laws—proven measures that can significantly reduce fatalities and save lives nationwide. Source: https://transportationtodaynews.com
