Diesel Surge Drives Up Costs for Tow Companies

As prices rise across Georgia, diesel is seeing the sharpest spike, leaving truckers and tow companies facing thousands of dollars in added costs.

At Howard’s Wrecker Service in Cobb County, diesel powers every call—but it’s now straining the bottom line. AAA reports diesel prices have jumped about $1.65 in just a month, putting Georgia within 32 cents of a record high.

Howard’s operates 30 trucks and logged 22,000 miles last week alone. At roughly seven miles per gallon, that surge translated into an extra $5,000 in fuel costs in a single week.

The spike is being driven in part by global uncertainty, including conflict involving Iran, which continues to push oil prices upward.

Georgia lawmakers are considering suspending the state’s 37-cent diesel tax to provide some relief, though drivers say it won’t be enough.

“It’s crazy how fast it’s rising,” said operations manager Chris Williams, noting fixed-rate contracts make the hit even worse.

Drivers warn the impact won’t stay on the road—higher fuel costs will ultimately reach consumers. Source: https://www.fox5atlanta.com
