CT Weighs Streamlined Towed-Car Rules
Connecticut DMV Commissioner Tony Guerrera has proposed simplifying the state’s rules for selling towed vehicles, arguing the changes would balance the needs of towing companies with protections for consumers. Speaking Monday at the third meeting of a towing reform working group, Guerrera outlined a plan that would eliminate vehicle valuation by towers, start the sales process for all vehicles after 30 days, and require that all sales be conducted through public—not private—auctions.
Current law allows companies to begin selling cars valued under $1,500 after just 15 days, one of the fastest timelines in the country. Vehicles worth more start the process after 45 days. Reporting by CT Mirror and ProPublica previously found companies often undervalue vehicles and that DMV oversight is weak.
Consumer advocate Raphael Podolsky argued the commissioner’s plan does not go far enough, warning it “codifies aspects of the system that produced the problem.” Tow operators, however, say they must recoup storage and towing costs and worry new requirements will add burdens for low-value cars.
The 10-member working group must submit recommendations to lawmakers by Feb. 1. Source: https://www.newsfromthestates.com
