Cleveland Weighs Higher Impound Fees

The city of Cleveland is considering higher fees for drivers whose vehicles are taken to the Cleveland Police impound lot. Under the proposed legislation, daily storage fees at the city’s impound facility — operated by a private contractor — would increase in response to rising towing and operating costs. The contractor already collects storage fees in addition to towing and impound charges.

Currently, the city charges $125 to tow a vehicle. That fee rises to $175 when a driver is arrested and drops to $50 when police recover a stolen vehicle. Cleveland also charges a $30 impound fee, reduced to $10 for recovered stolen vehicles.

The City Council’s Safety Committee approved the proposal Wednesday, and a final vote could come on Monday night.

A separate proposal introduced in late 2025 would exempt crime victims from impound-related fees tied to police investigations. Councilman Mike Polensek said officials are still refining that measure as towing companies face growing challenges, especially handling heavier electric vehicles that often require flatbed transport.
