AAA Adds Electronic Signs to Tow Trucks
AAA is taking a more direct approach to improving roadside safety by equipping tow trucks with electronic message boards that remind motorists to "Slow Down, Move Over."
The initiative comes as roadside workers continue to face serious risks from inattentive drivers. According to AAA, all 50 states have Move Over laws requiring motorists to slow down and change lanes when approaching emergency and service vehicles stopped on the roadside. Yet only about 30% of drivers consistently comply.
The new variable message signs are designed to grab drivers' attention and provide a clear, easy-to-read reminder as they approach a roadside incident.
"Look at it. Read the message. Slow down and move over," said AAA's John Palumbo, who noted that video footage has shown motorists changing lanes much earlier when the electronic signs are displayed.
The stakes are high. AAA reports that approximately 350 people are struck and killed outside disabled vehicles each year. In 2024, 46 emergency responders, including tow truck operators, were killed after being hit while working roadside.
AAA has distributed more than 100 message boards to tow trucks across five states and plans to expand the program in an effort to make roadside recoveries safer for workers and stranded motorists alike.
